INTERNATIONAL ECONOMIC RELATIONS -- INTERNSHIP/CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

Given our location in Washington, D.C., one of the world's leading centers of international interaction, students have access to a wide array of internships and mentoring opportunities dealing with international economic relations.

All students are strongly encouraged to participate in internships while studying at the School of International Service. The University Career Center is available to discuss internship options with all American University students. Both domestic and international internships are available. Internships in which IER students have participated in the past have included such organizations as Honeywell International, the International Management Institute, International Monetary Fund, International Labor Organization, Overseas Private Investment Corporation, U.S. Department of Commerce, Korea Economic Institute of America, World Bank, AB Bellington (Commodities Trading), Economic Strategy Institute, and the U.S.-China Business Council.

Reflecting their varied interests and goals, graduates of the International Economic Relations Field have been hired by a wide range of government, private, and non-profit organizations in the United States and abroad. These organizations include U.S. government agencies and Congressional staffs, international organizations, research groups, trade associations, consultants, and the media. It has not been unusual for our graduates to accept full-time job offers from places where they have interned. Some have gone on to obtain PhDs or law degrees.

Alumni play a key role in helping students reach their career and academic goals. Alumni are active in presenting careers to the university community and recruiting School of International Service students for internships and jobs. In recent years, alumni have hosted receptions and discussions in such diverse locations as the World Bank, the State Department, and the Academy for Educational Development.
