Biography
Ambassador Anthony Quainton has been Diplomat in Residence at American University since fall 2003. Before joining the SIS faculty in the U.S. Foreign Policy program, Ambassador Quainton was President and CEO of the National Policy Association. During 199798 he was Executive Director of the Una Chapman Cox Foundation.

Quainton was a member of the United States Foreign Service from 1959 to 1997. His early postings included Sydney, Karachi, Rawalpindi, New Delhi, Paris, and Kathmandu. In 1976 he was named Ambassador to the Central African Republic. His subsequent posts included Ambassadorships in Nicaragua (198284), Kuwait (198487), and Peru (198992). In Washington he served as Coordinator for Counter Terrorism (197882), Deputy Inspector General (198789), Assistant Secretary of State for Diplomatic Security (199295) and Director General of the Foreign Service (199597). Since leaving government he has served on the International Policy Committee of the Catholic Bishops Conference, as Chairman of the Board of the Washington Theological Consortium, as Vice Chairman of the Public Diplomacy Council, and as President of the Lions Foundation of Washington, D.C. He is a Trustee of La Roche College.

Ambassador Quainton has been the recipient of numerous government awards including the Department of States Distinguished Honor Award and two Presidential Meritorious Service Awards. He was also the recipient of the American Foreign Service Associations William R. Rivkin and Christian A. Herter awards given to mid-level and senior Foreign Service Officers for "outstanding intellectual originality, courage, forthrightness, and constructive dissent." Ambassador Quainton is a former Marshall Scholar at Christ Church, Oxford; a student at Nuffield College; and a Research Fellow at St. Antonys College. Before attending University he was an English Speaking Union Schoolboy Fellow at the Sherborne School in England.
