Biography
Yael Warshel most recently served as Lecturer at the University of California, San Diego, where she conducted research about Palestinian and Israeli children’s reception of Palestinian and Israeli peacebuilding versions of Sesame Street. She has received support from both Israeli and Palestinian studies organizations for her research, as too, from communication, public service, and Middle East and African studies organizations. Situated in debates about the role of communication in political conflict, Warshel’s research examines the interpretation and impact of efforts that use communication for social change—primarily to manage ethnopolitical conflict. Her regional areas of expertise include Africa and the Middle East. Her most recent publications address both the contributions of communication and media studies to peace education and opinions of Jewish-Israeli children about watching Rechov Sumsum/Shara’a Simsim amidst armed political conflict. Warshel has implemented policy and conducted research on communication and conflict issues for the Truman Research Institute for the Advancement of Peace in Jerusalem, the Center for International Development and Conflict Management, and UNESCO.
