SIS GRADUATE RESEARCH AWARDS FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

ELIGIBILITY & APPLICATION TIMELINE
Who is eligible to receive funding?

  • Current M.A. students studying at American University's School of International Service are eligible to apply for funding to defray the costs of attending conferences, conducting research or working at an internship.  Undergraduate,  PhD, and non-SIS students are not eligible to apply. Award money cannot be used to pay tuition.
How much funding is available?
  • Students are eligible to receive up to $500 for domestic travel, and up to $1000 for travel abroad.
Where does the award money come from?
  • The SIS Dean's Office and the SIS Graduate Student Council contribute funds every year to the research awards.
When do I apply for an award if I want to travel in the:
  • Spring: apply during the Fall by November 15th
  • Summer: apply during the Spring by March 18th
  • Fall: unfortunately, awards are not available for travel during the Fall semester.
If I've already received an SIS Research Award once, can I apply again?
  • Students may continue to apply for funding as long as they are eligible; however, applications submitted by previous award recipients are less likely to be successful.
When will I be notified if I've been chosen as an award recipient?
  • Applications are generally reviewed shortly after the deadline, and award recipients are typically notified within two to three weeks.
APPLICATION QUESTIONS

What kind of things should I include in my "detailed budget"?
  • Transportation costs (airfare, train tickets, etc)
  • Conference registration fees (if applicable)
  • Living costs (food, hotel, etc.)
  • Any other expected travel expenses
What is a "Statement of Purpose"?
  • Your statement of purpose should describe how you intend to utilize the award, including details about the proposed conference/internship/research and how it contributes to your academic and professional goals. 
What do you mean by "most recent unofficial transcript"?
  • Transcripts do not need to be officially received through the university; you may simply print off a copy from my.american.edu. Also, if you do not yet have any grades from American University, an unofficial transcript from a previous institution will also suffice.
