International Participants
Visa Information
Participants who are not citizens or permanent residents of the United States are responsible for obtaining necessary visas. Please be aware that our Summer Institute is not an academic program or a degree program; it is a three week professional training program. Participants will need a B1 visa. They should NOT obtain an I-20 or F-visa.
For more information, please visit the US Department of State website or contact the PDI Program Administrator at pcrinst@american.edu
Visa Processing Times
Participants should apply for visas as early as possible. Processing times
vary and often require longer than thirty days; in fact, processing may
take as long as three or four months. Visa applications should thereore
be submitted well before participants' departure dates.
APPLY EARLY!
Visa Waivers
The Visa Waiver Program allows nationals of certain countries to travel
to the United States for tourism and business for 90 days or less without
obtaining a visa. Thus, participants from the following countries will not
require a visa: Andorra, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brunei, Denmark, Finland,
France, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg,
Monaco, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, San Marino, Singapore,
Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. Participants
from these countries will still need to present a valid, machine-readable
passport upon arrival to the US. Please see the
US Department of State VWP website for further information.
Health Insurance
The Peacebuilding & Development Institute and American University strongly urge all participants to have a health insurance that is recognized in the United States.
