
The forums were established to encourage information sharing and public dialogue to influence policy. To accomplish this task, PDI welcomes specialized experts and heads-of-state to share their views on conflicts and issues pertaining to peace processes around the world.

April 27, 2006: This roundtable allowed governmental, intergovernmental, and non-governmental
organizations to openly discuss the challenges and opportunities for coordination in confronting the grave humanitarian crisis in the Horn of Africa.
First Vice President Salva Kiir
on the Future of Southern Sudan
On
November 6th, 2005, PDI and the Sudan People's Liberation Movement hosted
the recently sworn in First Vice President of Sudan. He spoke on a wide
array of topics including the future of the Government of National Unity,
the peace process, women's rights, and corruption, amongst others. Following
his speech, VP Kiir responded to questions from the 600 member audience
for over 3 hours.

John Garang on the Sudanese Peace
Process
In June
2005, the Institute, working in partnership with the Washington, D.C. chapter
of the Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM), hosted Dr. John Garang,
the Vice-President of Sudan, on June 5th, 2005. Dr. Garang spoke on
the peace process in Sudan. Tragically, this was his last public appearance
in the United States before his death. Dr. Garang was a rebel leader from
the south of Sudan for 21 years and served as Sudan's first vice president
for only 21 days.

Bridging the Divide: Mitrovica
In September 2005, the Institute hosted a panel on peace relations in Mitrovica, Kosovo, a city torn by violence between the ethnic Serbs and Albanians. Three young leaders from the Mitrovica City Wide Youth council (CWYC) spoke about their experiences in creating the CWYC and representing Kosovo youth at a wide range of organizations such as the United Nations, Catholic Relief Services, and the Swiss government.
Tsunami and Hurricane Katrina:
Lessons Learned?
In
October 2006, the Institute organized a panel on the Tsunami and Hurricane Katrina
relief efforts. Speakers from the United Nations, Oxfam America, and the
Basic Education Coalition discussed policy implications, the role of education
in crisis situations, and challenges and opportunities for relief and development.
