About the Training Course:
This training is based on the integral components and essential skills of emergency relief. It includes an introduction to the general context of the complexity and diversity of relief situations and the relevance of applicable international humanitarian law. Practitioners will gain knowledge of the mechanisms and phases of coordination and response while learning how to apply the minimum standards and indicators set by SPHERE. This training is geared toward members of the NGO and donor community including technical advisors, program managers and associates, peacebuilding specialists, emergency relief coordinators, development advisors, and anyone who would like to expand their knowledge of the different subjects.
In addition to training in SPHERE standards, facilitators will lead discussions and activities that promote in-depth understanding and application of the Code of Conduct, International Humanitarian Law, humanitarian standards, and humanitarian principles. Participants will also gain knowledge on recent developments in accountability initiatives and the ability to reflect upon all the needs for an effective surge capacity in staff.

Participants will gain:
- An overview of what hazards, threats and health problems require the highest priority attention in different types of emergencies;
- Understanding and application of the Code of Conduct, establishment and purpose of humanitarian standards, and regard for humanitarian principles;
- Basic understanding of best-practice programming in information systems, water, health, nutrition, shelter, water, sanitation in humanitarian response;
- Knowledge of controversies in triage and tradeoffs in responding between sectors or among population groups in large crises; and
- Ability to reflect upon the limitations and capabilities of NGOs in deploying finite resources to major tragedies.
