Research and Background
Mark D. Hamilton has completed Ph.D. coursework and exams in International Relations and now is working on his dissertation research. A former junior high school teacher, youth camp administrator, college study abroad coordinator, and development consultant, Mark has extensive study and work experience in Latin America and South Asia (Sri Lanka). He completed his BA in Spanish at Taylor University (1997) and his MA in International Development at American University (2003).
Mark's dissertation research centers on the dynamic roles played by young people in processes of conflict, development, and peacebuilding around the world. Emphasis is on the incentive structures that underly diverse forms of youth political engagement. Examining an array of global cases, Mark plans to draw methodological and theoretical insights from fields of system dynamics, comparative politics, social movement analysis, and ethnographic inquiry.
Mark also has published and made numerous conference presentations related to research on immigration and transnationalism, religion and development, fair trade and consumer social responsibility, and links between popular and political culture. Upon completion of his doctoral studies, Mark plans to seek employment within the academic arena or in related fields of international development, youth empowerment, and/or cross-cultural education and training.
