Research and Background
Courtney C. Radsch’s work focuses on the Arab media and politics. Her dissertation examines what developments in the mainstream media in conjunction with citizen journalism in the form of blogs and other Internet content mean for politics in the Arab world, using Egypt and Lebanon as case studies. Ms. Radsch has done fieldwork in Egypt and Lebanon, and intends to return to the Middle East to conduct further research over the next year. She has received an NSEP Boren Fellowship for Arabic training and fieldwork in Lebanon and received a pre-dissertation fellowship from the Social Science Research Council (SSRC) to conduct research in Egypt.
In addition to her research on the Arab media, citizen journalism and politics, Ms. Radsch’s two fields of specialization are International Communications and International Relations. Most recently she presented a paper, “Manufacturing Reality: News Production and Arab Journalism on Satellite TV” at the International Studies Association (ISA) conference, and a paper entitled “Speaking Truth to Power: How Al Jazeera is Challenging and Improving Egyptian Journalism” at UCSB’s Center for Middle East Studies conference on Al Jazeera and the New Arab Media She has been a teaching assistant for courses on the Arab media and serves as the Book Review Editor for the journal Arab Media & Society. She has also been hired by NGOs to develop and teach journalism in Washington D.C. and Beirut, Lebanon.
Ms. Radsch is also an internationally published journalist whose work has appeared in the New York Times, The International Herald Tribune,the Daily Star, IslamOnline, Reset magazine and several other venues. She continues to freelance and is the professional Arab media blogger for Arabisto.com where she writes about her insights into American and Arabic news and media.
Ms. Radsch holds an M.S. in International Relations from Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service and a B.A., with highest honors, in Mass Communications from the University of California, Berkeley.
