Research and Background

Tazreena Sajjad is a second year PhD student at the School of International Service in American University. Her research interests include impunity, justice and reconciliation and gender in countries transitioning out of conflict. Till 2006, Tazreena Sajjad worked for Global Rights on a pro bono basis as the organization's Afghanistan Fellow. In this capacity, she supported Global Rights' work on the protection of women’s rights and documentation of human rights violations in Afghanistan. Prior to this position, Ms. Sajjad was Global Rights' Asia Program Associate for Afghanistan. She helped plan, design and support Global Rights’ program in Afghanistan that is geared toward enhancing the capacity of partners to use new legal mechanisms more strategically in the protection of human rights. Prior to this, Ms. Sajjad served as the Program Assistant for Asia Programs at the National Democratic Institute in Washington D.C., and as a Research Analyst for Africa and Asia at Survivors’ Rights International. She also worked as a Research Assistant for the Bangladesh National Women Lawyers Association in Dhaka, Bangladesh, and as a Research Assistant for the Center for Victims of Torture in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Ms. Sajjad’s publications include: "When Civil Society Promotion Fails State-Building: The Inevitable Fault-lines in Post-conflict Reconstruction (co-authored with Julie Mertus)," "Addressing the Gray Areas of International Law," "Women Guerillas: Marching Toward True Freedom?", "The Post-Genocidal Period and Its Impact on Women" (forthcoming) and Human Rights and Human Insecurity: The Contributions of U.S. Counter-Terrorism (co-authored with Julie Mertus, forthcoming) She has also served as a guest lecturer on Gender and Post-Conflict Reconstruction in Dhaka University, Bangladesh.

Ms. Sajjad graduated with a Master’s degree in International Peace and Conflict Resolution from the School of International Service at American University in Washington D.C. She obtained her bachelor’s degree from Macalester College in Minnesota, a recipient of the De Witt scholarship and a member of the Pi Sigma Alpha Political Science Honor Society. She is a graduate of the Red Cross Nordic United World College in Norway. Ms. Sajjad is a recipient of the Gandhi Memorial Scholarship for Peace from the Gandhi Center in Washington D.C. and a frequent contributor on political analyses to The Daily Star, Bangladesh’s leading national newspaper.

Ms. Sajjad is currently working on her dissertation proposal on seeking accountability in the aftermath of war.
