Students Network with SIS Alumni
at Annual Reception

On Thursday, February 9th, SIS Career Week culminated
in the SIS student-alumni networking reception gathering
around 150 students, alumni and employers. A preparatory
session that took place right before the reception provided
tips on how to network, how to approach the alums, how to
follow up and what to write in the thank you letters. SIS
students, mostly wearing suits and looking sharp and
professional, left an excellent impression with alumni and
employers.

Some of the alumni who attended this event
including Tamika Cameron MA ‘03 of USAID, Meredith
DeDona BA’03 with Booz Allen Hamilton, Carmen Iezzi
BA’00 MA’01 from the Atlantic Council of the U.S., Matthew
Buzby BA’90 with Development Alternatives, Inc., Mickie
Mailey BA’99 with Pan American Health Organization,
Amit Mathur MA’05 from Department of Justice,
Victoria Haberkamp BA’05 with the World Bank, Jessica
Hasslen BA’93 with National Geographic, Eugenio Hillman
BA’98 with Klune Logistics, and David Hollingsworth MA’02
with Center for International Relations.

They answered students’ questions and offered suggestions and tips regarding the employment process. Business cards exchanged hands and arrangements were made to email resumes and continue networking on an individual basis. Some job and internship positions were advertised at the reception. The executive director of the Career Center Katherine Stahl and SIS Dean Louis Goodman addressed the gathering with warm welcome.

In the evaluations, one of the alumni characterized students they met with as ‘very well spoken and engaging’, while another commented about them as ‘articulate, interested, with good eye contact’. The overwhelming majority of attendees rated the experience as excellent and their excitement and appreciation was reflected in the comments to the Career Center representatives throughout the reception.

SIS student-alumni reception reflects the spirit of support and
encouragement typical for SIS alums. The entire SIS career week is the testament of close collaboration between the alumni in the variety of fields and the SIS team at the Career Center. Exploring and utilizing On-line Community contacts can make networking easy for current SIS students and provide them with valuable contacts in the field, who would be happy to mentor and assist them in their job search.
