After having lived and worked internationally for three years following college, I was interested in pursuing a graduate education that offered three main things: coursework in international environmental policy making; the opportunity to learn experientially through internships at institutions that affect federal policy; and the ability to see my family more often. The Global Environmental Policy program in the School of International Service offered all three.
I grew up on the Eastern Shore, Maryland, so enrolling in a school that’s situated in D.C. enabled me to be close to home, which is something I had not been for a while. It also enabled me to dive in to some unique and valuable hands-on experiences, such as internships at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Climate Change Division, and at the House Resource Committee on Capitol Hill. Finally, the GEP program allowed for flexibility in pursuing coursework that included environmental science, quantitative analysis, and environmental policy and law.
I now live in Berkeley, California, and work for ICLEI-Local Governments for Sustainability, an international nonprofit that assists municipal governments in their efforts to reduce the emissions that cause global warming. In the U.S., it is action to protect climate at the local government level that is leading the way. I provide technical assistance to city government officials as they embark on the process of measuring their climate impact and implementing policies to reduce that impact.
Studying at SIS and living
and working in D.C. offers tons of opportunities for making yourself better
and preparing yourself for finding a job you can enjoy. It’s just up
to the student to take advantage those opportunities.
