SIS
student Stacy Aldinger nominated for Truman scholarship. |
It’s proving to be another good year for AU’s prospective Truman scholars. Three students have been selected as national finalists. Out of a nominee pool of 1,200 only 200 national finalists are chosen.
One of the nominees is Stacy Aldinger, School of International Service (SIS). After a semester abroad in Beijing through AU Abroad, where she taught English to migrant workers and conducted research on girls’ attitudes towards academics, she has mentored at an Anacostia elementary school and is currently studying in Brussels.
Urban renewal is the area of concern for Daniel Guarnera, a political science major. After working with a grassroots organization in his hometown of Newark, N. J., he has continued his studies in Lille, France, at the Institut d’Etudes Politiques (Sciences-Po Lille). Guarnera is a strong French speaker.
Jenifer Smyers, a double major in justice, law and society and public communication, is well known on campus as director of the AU Women’s Initiative. Smyers became interested in the plight of women asylum seekers and refugees through an internship with Church World Service’s Immigration and Refugee Program, and she wrote a children’s book, Renee the Refugee, that was circulated to members of the Senate and House as an advocacy tool.
The scholarship provides
about 75 students with $30,000 for graduate training leading to a career in
public service. Last year, AU’s Forrest Dunbar won a Truman scholarship,
and Lacey Rosenbaum and Jacqueline Ingber were finalists. Scholarship winners
will be announced later this month.
