GRAD DUAL DEGREE PROGRAMS: KOREA UNIVERSITY

In 1993, American University's School of International Service and Korea University's Graduate School of International Studies established a unique dual degree program allowing their graduate students to spend one year studying at American University and one year studying at Korea University. Upon completion of two years of study, the students receive master's degrees simultaneously from the two institutions. The program includes language training, graduate course work, and professional internships.

Korea University
Korea University was originally founded as Bosung Private College in 1905 by the Treasurer of the Royal Household, Yong-Ik Lee, who believed that educating the young generation was the only way to secure Korea's independent status as a nation. Today Korea University is widely acknowledged as one of the top ranked universities in Korea. Its reputation for quality is based on excellence in teaching, research and service to Korean society.

The Graduate School of International Studies (GSIS) was established in 1991 in the response to the demands of globalization and internationalization. The major goals of the GSIS are to develop specialists in the field of international relations and area studies, to promote the study of these area languages, and the globalization of Korean studies.

AU students can either major in International Studies or Korean Studies. The emphasis of the International Studies Department is on international organizations, international security, and international commerce. The Department of Korean Studies at GSIS is designed for international and domestic students to enhance their understanding of Korea, particularly contemporary Korea. All of the GSIS courses are taught in either English or, in the case of area studies, in the relevant language. The Department of Korean Studies students must complete three semesters of Korean language classes. A placement test determines the required language class level.
