Political Economy of the Middle East

Experience the cross-roads of the Middle East where Islamic tradition meets modernization and robust economic development. As an AU student, you will join Arab students to explore the political, ideological, and socioeconomic dynamics of the Middle East from the expansion of European power in the 16th Century to present.

Academic Details
This eight-week program introduces students to the major political and socioeconomic challenges facing Middle Eastern states and societies, using the Gulf States as case studies. The program consists of three academic components worth 3 credits each: a mandatory core seminar that includes lectures and discussions with prominent think tanks and officials in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, an optional internship, and an optional independent study (alternative to internship).
Site Visits
Students on past programs have enjoyed trips to the Gold Market and Creek in Dubai, the National Archives in Abu Dhabi, and the old cities of Sharjah, Al-Ain (a desert oasis fortress), and Ajman.

Program Costs: AU tuition plus program fee. Details in the program guide [pdf].
Who Should Attend:
Graduate students in all majors and disciplines from any U.S. university may apply. Advanced undergraduates who have completed at least 90 credits toward the completion of their degrees or are enrolled in the Honors program are also welcome to apply. All students must demonstrate academic achievement, an interest in issues covered in the seminar, and the ability to adapt to a cross-cultural environment.
Logistical Details:
Students are responsible for making their own flight arrangements to/from Dubai. Students will be housed in dormitory-style accommodations for the duration of the seminar and in shared tourist-class facilities during the internship.

Application instructions and materials are available in the program guide. Students must read the entire program guide before applying. All applications are reviewed on a rolling basis and must be received by March 16, 2009 for priority consideration.
