Black Faculty & Staff Affinity Group

Our Mission

The mission of the Black Faculty and Staff Affinity (BFSA) group at American University (AU) is to help foster a campus climate and culture of unity, equity and respect. The BFSA serves as an advocate and resource for advancing the academic, professional, social and cul­ tural growth and development of Black faculty and staff through outreach, mentoring, net­ working, community service and enrichment programs.

Four Pillars

ADMIN POLICY REVIEW: Provide leadership and support to institutional leaders at AU with a comprehensive and representative perspective on institutional policies, campus cli­ mate, and programs that affect Black faculty, staff, and students.

RESOURCE & COMMUNICATION: Serve as an advocate, support system, and resource group for Black faculty and staff as we strive toward institutional goals of inclusive excel­ lence in the AU community.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT: Promote educational and career opportunities for professional growth and upward mobility for Black faculty and staff, by providing opportunities for networking, mentoring and special enrichment programs.

COMMUNITY BUILDING: Establish and maintain activities and social spaces that con­ tribute to building community amongst Black/ African heritage staff in different university units, alumni, community groups.
