Note – For the Fall 2020 semester, Technology Services has NO laptops available to loan to faculty and staff. The collection is currently on loan to other University departments to support online teaching. We do have a large collection of Chromebooks which have similar functionality. They have online access to Microsoft Office and Teams, connect to a projector through USB-C and can connect to the campus VPN.

Circulating Technology Equipment

The Technology Services Desk has several types of circulating technology, including:

  • Graphing, Scientific, and Financial Calculators
  • HDMI Cables
  • Headphones
  • Laptops (Dell Chromebooks)
  • Power Cords (USB-C, Magsafe 1 and 2)
  • SD Card Readers
  • Video Adapters

Items may be borrowed for one day loan by current American University students, faculty and staff. Items may leave the library, but should not be left unattended. Items cannot be renewed online or by phone. Items may be re-checked out in person on or before the due date. If Tech Services is currently out of a particular item, users must wait 4 hours to re-checked out.

Fines will be charged for items that are returned late at the rate of $4.00 per day. Replacement fees will be charged for items lost or stolen while checked out.

Faculty Technology Collection

The library also has a collection of classroom technologies available for checkout to AU faculty and staff members only, including:

  • Conference Call Speaker/Mic
  • Headsets
  • HD Webcams
  • Portable Projectors
  • Presentation Remotes

Standard checkout times are for one day loans. Items cannot be renewed online or by phone and must be renewed in person. Fines will be charged for items that are returned late at the rate of $4.00 per day. Replacement fees will be charged for items lost or stolen while checked out.

AU Faculty and staff can reserve Chromebooks directly by emailing techservices@american.edu.

 

Repair Replacement Chromebooks

Tech Services has a dedicated collection of Chromebooks for use by AU students, faculty and staff whose own laptops are damaged and being repaired. These Chromebooks can be checked out for as long as the repair takes. To have a long term loan authorized, bring your damaged laptop to the OIT Support Desk on the Library First Floor. OIT staff will advise you on the best options for repairing your laptop and authorize a long term loan. When a Chromebook is available, you will receive an email from Tech Services. Long term loan Chromebooks can not be checked out until OIT Support Desk staff examine your laptop and authorize a loan. Repair replacement is the only purpose for this set of Chromebooks. Other users wanting a Chromebook for an extended time can check out a one day loan and return it for renewal each day. 

Classroom Response Technology

The Library does not loan classroom response hardware as this field has largely moved to cell phone based polling apps. The Center for Teaching, Research and Learning (CTRL) provides support for two response apps on their webpage -
Poll Everywhere and Socrative
