ABOUT THE AWARD

Since 1978, the Roger W. Jones Award has annually recognized two federal career executives of the Senior Executive Service who have demonstrated superior leadership in achieving their agency's mission and developing future managers.

The Roger W. Jones Award recipients are federal career executives of the Senior Executive Service committed not only to mission success, but also to developing and inspiring those whom they lead, consistent with the career of the extraordinary public servant for whom the Award is named.

Roger Jones (February 3, 1908 – May 28, 1993) served seven US Presidents over 43 years, including tours as Deputy Secretary of State, Deputy Director of the Office of Management and Budget, and Chairman of the Civil Service Commission.  

He extolled the importance of public administration, and stressed the need to provide professional education for public managers.

NOMINATION CRITERIA

The criteria for this prestigious award for federal career executives (members of SES) are demonstrated exceptional capabilities in the following areas:

  • superior leadership which has resulted in outstanding organizational achievements
  • a strong commitment to bringing about effective continuation of government by helping to develop the careers of people who will serve as managers and executives in the future federal service

Presidential appointees and other administration appointees are invited each spring to submit nominations of career executives responsible to them who have demonstrated outstanding executive leadership.

AWARD PRESENTATION

Recipients of the Roger W. Jones Award are honored at the Key Executive Leadership Conference held each Spring in Washington, DC, an event that draws hundreds of federal leaders from across the government for a day dedicated to personal and professional development.

Since 1978, the Roger W. Jones Award has annually recognized two federal career executives of the Senior Executive Service who have demonstrated superior leadership in achieving their agency's mission and developing future managers.

This year, four awards will be presented at the Annual Key Executive Leadership Conference on November 9, 2020.

Recipients of the Roger W. Jones Award will be honored in a special ceremony hosted be American University and receive a $2,500 cash award.
